Dr. Scott H. Hutchins

Dr. Scott H. Hutchins - 2025

A native of Carmel, Indiana, Dr. Scott H. Hutchins has built a career defined by scientific leadership, innovation, and service to agriculture and higher education.

Hutchins earned a master's degree in entomology from MSU in 1983. He has a bachelor's degree from Auburn University and a doctorate from Iowa State University, both in entomology. His academic training prepared him for leadership at the intersection of research, innovation, and public service.

He currently serves as undersecretary for research, education, and economics and chief scientist for the United States Department of Agriculture, providing national leadership for agricultural science and innovation. Previously, Hutchins served as USDA deputy undersecretary and spent more than three decades with Dow AgroSciences, later Corteva, where he led global research and development efforts.

His accomplishments include more than 140 publications, professional honors from the Entomological Society of America, and national recognition for advancing agricultural science strategy.

Hutchins remains actively engaged in service, education, and community leadership. His career reflects Mississippi State's commitment to excellence, impact, and leadership in agriculture. His leadership advances discovery, supports students, informs policy, strengthens partnerships, and embodies the land-grant mission through collaboration, integrity, accountability, and lasting public benefit nationwide.
